After a fresh change of clothes, our bus brought us to our campsite where we would end up staying for two nights due to some 'rain difficulties'. We were also divided into smaller 'sub-groups', where we would cook breakfast and lunch, and on one day complete a team navigation hike together! I found these groups a fun bonding experience, as they offered the opportunity to both eat and have conversations with individuals in a close environment that we otherwise might not have. It was also fun to challenge ourselves in stepping up for different leadership positions within the group, whether that be trying to cook a meal, chop some vegetables, or spy on other groups for food ideas. When we arrived at our camp sites, I think many of us were surprised to find set tents, ice-cream, and even bathrooms, (and porta-potties). Over the course of the next few days, we embarked on multiple hikes down our first mountain, to a water pool, and through so much breathtaking scenery. Our Saturday night also ended with a wonderfully planned Havdalah, that ended in rap presentations from different people, Israeli dancing, and an all-inclusive song sesh. Although our hikes from the trip were occasionally separated by bus rides, there was still an overriding sense of fun and accomplishment as each day passed! This also included one hike that was back up a mountain we had walked down after visiting a water well on our second day, which I think many of us would agree to be the most challenging physical work of the trip. Although the walk was about a 20-30 minute steeper uphill, many of us finished the hike bubbling with energy and a perception of personal pride and achievement. I also found the amount of encouragement I heard being shouted from person to person, no matter their place on the hill amazing.
Some of my favourite memories of the trip were also formed as our day came to a close, and a fire started at night that was surrounded by marshmallows, stories, and the laughter of our group. It was important that although many of us still had access to our phones, we chose the presence of one another after a long exhausting day. It was in those moments that were filled with the noise from talking and music, that I think many of us felt the strength of community we had established over the course of the past 2 and a half months.
As our final day on Yam L'Yam approached, we changed our pace from hiking to biking. Although many of us started peddling with doubts and skepticism about our 'biking abilities' covered up by humour, the overall ride was about an hour and a half pleasant journey with beautiful nofs! Most of the ride was on the paved paths of village streets or more main roads, with some downhills and some uphills many stopped and walked up. However as we finally approached the Mediterranean Sea there was a sense of finale in spending the rest of the afternoon cooling off with ice cream, tanning, and washing off the grime of the past few days with fun (and safe!) fights in the cool water by the beach for a few hours.
Although some of us may have been 'more in our zone' than others beginning the trip, we all took huge steps out of our comfort zones; whether gaining the confidence to try new activities, or interacting with newer individuals. Inevitably, we all grew together as a community in sharing such an unforgettable experience.
Also a huge shoutout to Eliora Goodman and Ryan Gordon for providing 99% of the photographs featured on this post! Thank you for documenting this experience for us :)
What was your favourite memory from Yam L'Yam? Do you think you would embark on a similar 'hiking adventure' again?

My favorite yam l' yam memory was the hike we did on Saturday. I was super intimidated by the steep slope but I persisted and making it all the way down and then back up was so satisfying and made me feel really accomplished. I loved hearing all the people shouting encouragements, I had really good conversations that day, and the view was incredible. I'd definitely do another hiking adventure - I've always enjoyed hiking and yam l'yam helped me re-remember that.
ReplyDeleteYam L'Yam was an absolutely amazing experience. My favorite part of this hike was the bike ride on the last day. I ride my bike alot at home and it was a ton of fun. I also loved being able to cook because I love cooking and I like to cook at home. The hikes themselves were also amazing and the different scenery on each hike was extremely interesting. I would definitely do a hiking trip like this again, especially if that means I could get the amazing onion soup one more time.
ReplyDeleteYam l’Yam was such an incredible experience for me, and I would probably even go as far as to say it has been the highlight of my EIE experience so far. My favorite memory from the trip as a whole would have to be the campfires each night. Although creating the fire was a simple, routine task as we were camping, I really enjoyed the company of having everyone sit together in one space. Often times, we separate ourselves into smaller groups and rarely spend extended periods of time as an entire kehillah, which I think this trip allowed us to do more of.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory from Yam L Yam was hanging out with everyone at night around the campfire. While many of us had our phones, most people decided not to use them. Instead, we talked, sang, and laughed with each other. I thought that this really helped develop an extremely strong community. This helped me bond with a lot of people that I had not really talked to before the hike. I would definitely go on a trip like this again. In fact, this summer, I will be going to Yellowstone for 3 weeks to go backpacking!
ReplyDeleteMy happiest memory was hiking up the mountain after being at the water pool. Going at my own pace allowed me to take screenshots in my mind of the magnificent view. Taking a couple minutes or even seconds to gaze out at the mountain was priceless. I will definitely be going on a relaxing enjoyable hike sometime again in my life.
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite memory from Yam L'yam was the last day when we went biking and then to the beach. The biking was really beautiful filled with some amazing views and sites. Time at the beach after gave us some time to reflect on the week of hiking we had just completed. Yam L'yam was definitely an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life and I can definitely see myself going on a similar hike like this in the future.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory from Yam L'Yam was the first day when we did the water hike. When we first all got into the water, we tried our hardest not to get wet. We stood on our tippy toes and made sure no one would splash us. After about five minutes of this, we reached a part of the river that went up to above our waist. At this point I was over the whole staying dry, and I started to splash the people I was walking with (Ben S. and Ethan W.) They splashed me back and we ended up getting into a huge water fight. We spent the rest of the walk holding hands and trying to pull each other under the water. Before the hike, I was't that close to either of them but by the end I finally felt as if we were. I would definitely do a hike like this again, however hopefully in nicer weather conditions. I would probably want to go on a longer hike, and one where we carry all our stuff on our back, not on a bus.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite memories from Yam L'Yam was the evening camp fires every night. The reason why I really enjoyed it was because it was the first time where the group could be themselves. The campfires was optional so in addition, it was the first time that the group had come together without being forced to be there. During the campfires, we shared stories, sang songs, and played games. I believe that it had really brought the group together as we share similar memories of Yam L'Yam. I would definitely do the hike again with the same people as I never felt a dull moment through the trip where there was always some excitement.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory from Yam L'Yam was probably the second day of hiking when I was completely exhausted from the hikes and I felt like I couldn't possibly walk anymore, I started singing "Ani V'Atah" with Jarred as we walked past a group of older folks also hiking. One of the men in front of us started singing along which made me really happy and reminded me of our extended community as Jews in Israel. As a whole, I'm glad that I took part in this experience but I can say for a fact that I don't plan on ever doing something like this again.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory from Yam L'Yam was the last day of hiking when we climbed to the fortress, sat by the pools, and hiked up a beautiful mountain. It was gorgeous and showed me the land in a whole different way, I always think of Israel as dry and barren. I love backpacking and camping so I know I will be doing many more trips similar to this one in the future.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory was the hike we did with our smaller group. We got to adventure on our own and talk with people we haven't had a chance to. We then got to play games on our own because we got so ahead, and since our walky talky wasn't working, we didn't have to worry about any distractions. I hope in the future I will be able to do a real hike across the country, not something with this much bus travel. Although I'm no pro, and I am very slow, I love to hike.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory of Yam L'yam was easily just sitting around the campfire and being all together. It was nice to really unwind during a time surrounded with pressure and stress. I would love to do another hike soon, and a big one at some point in my life, ideally without an injured knee this time!
